Castle Path

The Burgenweg takes you back to the days of the Barons of Rothenfluh and Unspunnen. Haltenwald - various springs in the Haltewald forest (reservoir/purification plant) provide the Wilderswil municipality with its water. Rothenfluh Castle ruins - the remains of the former Rothenfluh Castle cling to a small band of rock. Little is known of the inhabitants from the 12th century. It is most likely that they left the cliff castle for a safer seat in Unspunnen Castle. Tschingelmatte - according to legend and folklore, the Baron of Rothenfluh was slain near here by his brother. Exiled and despondent, the homeless assassin ended his once mighty lineage in distant lands. Plattenweg -this footpath built by soldiers in 1944 leads up to the Unspunnen ruins and fine views of the Bödeli (flood plain) with the villages of Wilderswil, Bönigen, Matten and Interlaken. After the last Ice Age (about 10000 years ago), debris and boulders carried down by the waters of the Lütschine, Saxetenbach and Lombach split the so-called Lake Wendel into two, forming Lake Thun and Lake Brienz were formed. Unspunnen ruins - the local region was ruled from Unspunnen Castle by the Barons of Rothenfluh-Unspunnen (12th century), the Lords of Weissenburg (14th century) and Lords of Scharnachtal (15th century). After 1500 the castle was abandoned and fell into decay. It was finally used as a quarry.

Here too you have spectacular views over your immediate surroundings and the snow-capped summits of the Jungfrau massif. Gerbigässli - ‘Gerberei’ means tannery  - and as the name says, hides were made into leather here in earlier times.
