Unfortunately, our diverse natural world is being steadily and insidiously undermined. Thankfully, some natural havens remain, offering sanctuary to both butterflies and rare flowers. One of these is the area of Cholgruebe/Stoffelberg-Allmi above Leissigen, which is located on the panorama trail above Lake Thun.

The trail starts by the PostBus terminus in Aeschiried. The panorama trail gently descends over a picturesque escarpment to “Hellbode”, then along an alpine track up to “Ufem Viertel”. Hiking mostly through woodland, you then continue the leisurely descent towards “Chüngstuel”. Above the village of Leissigen, you are treated to a wonderful panorama of the Niederhorn and most of Lake Thun. The trail now descends gently to the suspension bridge over the “Spissibach”. Around 15 minutes after crossing the bridge, you come to the “Stoffelberg-Allmi”. It’s worth following the mountain trail that branches off towards “Brunni” for a few metres to take in the wonderful view of the hills. A final point of interest can be found on the descent from the “Meielisalp” to Leissigen. Beside the Restaurant Finel, you will find a memorial to the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler, which commands a superb panorama of Lake Thun. This is where the painter painted the first picture in his “Landscapes on Lake Thun” series in 1904.

Kulturlandschaftspreis 2012
Every year, the “Kulturlandschaftspreis” (Cultivated Landscape Prize) is awarded to the most beautiful, and most valuable, areas of cultivated landscape in the eastern Bernese Oberland. By supporting and boosting the area’s image through tourism, the award incentivises farmers to manage their land sustainably and help preserve our beautiful natural environment.
