Schynige Platte railway

The Schynige Platte-Bahn was built in 1893. Experience evocative moments on the ascent from Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte with its wonderful views. On the 7.3 km ride, the rack-and-pinion railway climbs 1420 m. Along the way you can admire a natural idyll encompassing lakes Thun and Brienz and a panorama of mountains.

The journey starts from Wilderswil station, which you can reach by taking the Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken Ost or by private car (parking available behind the station). Experience sheer nostalgia on a railway that still uses electric locomotives dating from the early industrial days. There are no electronic signals at all on the route; trains are personally waved off by railway managers, with all points operated by hand.
