Exploring the Bernese Oberland on its rivers and streams

Do you dream of wild mountain streams and thundering rivers? You can negotiate Interlaken’s tempestuous mountain streams in the best of company with a rubber dinghy and paddle. While river rafting, an action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled ride is guaranteed. Equipped with a neoprene suit and life jacket, you’ll commence your journey through the region's untamed waters on a raft. After a short induction and safety talk from your professional guides, it’s time to hit the water. Paddle through waves and steer the boat as it accelerates downriver. Adrenaline junkies can experience the water minus the boat on a canyoning trip. Edge along smooth cliff faces and through the raging river to a thundering waterfall. And of course you’ll be accompanied by a professional guide every step of the way.

Fishing in a mountain paradise

Whether lazing in a boat or waiting on the bank for a fish to bite: with a valid fishing licence, you can do both in the Canton of Bern. Is fishing in the middle of Switzerland, on a lake surrounded by mountains, your idea of paradise? In Brienz you can go fishing on Lake Brienz accompanied by an experienced guide. A boat will take you from the jetty at the Brienz boat rental station out onto the lake. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, all you have to do is wait until you get a bite. Or perhaps you’d prefer to fish in the trout-rich waters of the Stockhorn? The lakes Hinterstocken and Oberstocken are perfect for angling and overflowing with rainbow trout. If you have your own equipment, you can purchase a fishing license and train ticket at the base station and get off at the midway station Chrindi. Don’t have a fishing rod? No need to worry – at Chrindi midway station, you can hire a fishing rod and buy some bait.

Relaxed places to bathe by the lake

Find your favourite spot by the lake. During the summer months, the Holiday Region Interlaken boasts 22 “badis”, 17 of which are bathing beaches right on the banks of the lake. The Schwäbis River Pool is right on the River Aare, a short walk from the departure point for the dinghy tours from Thun to Bern. On the bathing beaches of Neuhaus, Merligen, Gunten, Oberhofen, Hünegg, Niederried and Brienz, you can enjoy the sunset on a sunny summer’s evening. You can seek out a picturesque spot to bathe outside the badis too. Treat yourself to a refreshing dip in the cool lake, which in summer reaches average temperatures of between 17 and 21 degrees. And that’s still a little nippy, you can admire the water from a pedalo or rowing boat instead.

A variety of boat trips on the lake

Do you like to rip across the water at high speed, or do you prefer a more leisurely pace? Whether it’s an exhilarating jetboat ride on Lake Brienz or a laid-back steamboat cruise to savour the view, the choice is yours. If you want to make the crossing on a BLS ship, make sure to check the timetable. The journey from Interlaken Ost to Brienz takes 1 hour 15 minutes and around 2 hours from Interlaken West to Thun. The best option is to check the current timetable on the website or at the BLS ticket office. A particularly memorable experience is a boat trip on Lake Thun in winter, during which you can gaze at the snow-capped peaks of the surrounding mountains.

In winter, the atmosphere around Lake Brienz is breathtaking. Nowhere is this more so than on the water. Experience the natural beauty of Lake Brienz from a kayak. The kayak tour starts in Bönigen. Accompanied by professional kayakers, you’ll be well equipped from the start. Before the tour, you receive a high-quality drysuit to keep you warm. Out on the lake, you’ll glide across the placid waters in your kayak. Silence, with nothing but the gentle splash of your paddle. Over time, paddling becomes second nature and the panoramic view comes back into focus. From your kayak, on one side of the lake, you’ll see Interlaken’s local mountain the Harder Kulm, the Brienzergrat and the Brienz Rothorn. On the other, the Laucherhorn and Schynige Platte.
