The village of Saxeten, home to 100 residents, is surrounded by extensive meadows and pastures that ring to the sound of cowbells. A circular hike on a sunny slope gives a wonderful insight into this idyllic landscape. The valley at the foot of the Schwalmere mountain opens up to the northeast with a magnificent view of Lake Brienz.
From the postbus stop at the old school, the route leads out of the village and climbs steeply up over pastureland to Ankere-Wald. On a less steep, winding forest path you reach Blattisegg, with a beautiful view of Lake Brienz and the Augstmatthorn mountain. An almost level, old smugglers' path then runs into the valley to the Usserberg hut. From here, the official hiking trail leads through forest back down to the village. For the circular hike, you follow the wide gravel road into the valley. Passing the hut on Alp Fahl, you continue - always gently downhill - to the little hut on Ramsermatte. In spring, this mountain meadow, nestling harmoniously into the slope, is a veritable floral paradise. The marked trail then continues steeply down to Holderboden, from where you return to Saxeten on a surfaced road.
The annual Cultural Landscape Award is presented to particularly beautiful and valuable cultural landscapes in the Oberland Ost region. Through support and image cultivation on the part of tourism, the award is intended to give farmers a small incentive to continue sustainable management and thus contribute to preserving the beauty of our natural world.
