The mountain village of Saxeten, with less than 100 inhabitants, is regarded by connoisseurs as a starting point for unique summit hikes. The nearby hiking destinations Bällehöchst and Morgenberghorn offer incomparable panoramic views.
From the minibus station, the route initially follows the little road uphill into the valley towards Innerfeld. The hard surface ends at Rengggraben. The alpine road then begins to rise more steeply. Where it turns a few hundred meters downhill, the view opens to the waterfalls of the Wyss- and Saxetbach streams. The large hairpin bend of the alpine road is cut on the old alpine path. Only shortly before the Nessleren/Underberg alpine hut does the slope ease temporarily. The massive rock massif of the Schwalmere dominates the alpine basin.
The cart road descends gently towards the Saxetbach, narrows to an alpine path and then turns into a steep ascent path again. Through forest sections and over flower-rich meadows, you approach Hinder Bällen above the tree line (to Saxetwald–Saxeten 2h, to Saxetwald–Wilderswil 2h40). The view after the strenuous ascent is magnificent: from Morgenberghorn, the wave lines of the Leissig and Därlig ridges run down to Aabeberg. In the depth lie the tightly nestled houses of Saxeten. The Bällehöchst is already visible. Now you head towards the alpine hut Usser Bällen about 100 m higher and ascend, partly off-path, to the saddle between Sulegg and Bällehöchst (point 1998). The change is surprising: an extensive scree slope stretches from Sulegg down to the Sylere alp; countless runnels have carved into the slate rubble. When it is completely quiet, you can even hear little streams gurgling and stones tumbling. The Bällehöchst viewpoint lies about a good quarter of an hour ahead. Rarely does one experience the diversity of the foothills and the enormous altitude differences more impressively than here. Niederhorn, Hohgant, Schrattenflue and Brienzergrat can be seen, with Brienzersee and the eastern part of Thunersee in the depths. To the south, the Jungfrau and the mountains in the back of the Lauterbrunnen valley shine.
For the descent, take the path back to point 1998 and then cross the aforementioned scree slope of the Tschingel. Caution is advised when crossing the final cliff bands. Past the Sulsseewli, where Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are reflected, you reach the Sulshütten and 10 minutes later the huts in Chüebodmi (to Sousläger–Grütschalp 1h20). A good forest path then leads very steeply down past Sulwald to Isenfluh.
The cable car ride from Sulwald to Isenfluh saves about three-quarters of an hour of the steep descent.
