More than a normal cable car ride thanks to the guaranteed views of a natural paradise

Enjoy sensational views when you ride the Stockhornbahn. Reach the summit of the Stockhorn in just 20 minutes. Thanks to the magnificent views throughout the ascent, the entire trip is an experience to savour. Once at the summit station, you will be greeted by commanding views and bracing mountain air. An excursion to the Stockhorn pays dividends at any time of year.

At 2190 metres above sea level, the Stockhorn is the highest peak in the Stockhorn range. The imposing peak towers over the town of Thun at the entrance to the Holiday Region Interlaken. As you travel through the Gürbe or Aare valleys towards the Bernese Oberland, the peak is visible long before you arrive. Diverse experiences of a mountainous landscape and culinary delights await on the Stockhorn at any time of year. On clear days, the views down to the town of Thun and its lake and across the Central Plateau to Jura are simply stunning. The cable car transports visitors from Erlenbach in the Simmental valley to the summit station on the Stockhorn in less than 20 minutes. The Stockhornbahn comprises two sections. A pair of modern, panoramic cabins shuttle between Erlenbach and the midway station of Chrindi, where you change to an iconic red gondola and swing over Lake Hinterstocken on your way to the summit. The journey, which is four kilometres in total, is an experience to savour.

The Stockhornbahn operates year-round. The summer season lasts from mid-April to mid-November, during which time the service runs daily. From mid-November onwards, the cable car only operates from Wednesday to Sunday. In the first week of January, however, you can take advantage of daily trips to the snowy peak of the Stockhorn. Details of the operating times can be found in the general information on the Stockhornbahn.

Pros, cons and advices on Swiss Alpine mountain peak
PROS * Great stunning views of high snow capped mountains on one side and Lake Thun and the surrounding towns and villages on the other side * Restaurant and picnic tables * There are hikes and trails from around there CONS * Not easy access- train to Emmental and then at least 15-20 minute walk uphill through village with poor signage to talstation also not clearly marked enough * No hikes that include continuous or more epic mountain views, as found in Jungfrau region "I VISITED THIS PLACE"... ... because I heard and read about Stockhorn as a unique mountain peak that was infrequently visited, so I went. The train from Spiez was in another direction from the three other directions that i had used extensively in the past/ As stated, the walk from the train station to the gondola talstation was probably 20 minutes and poorly marked. I only arrived there because I followed the other (native swiss0 hikers, even though they were quite quicker and faster than me. After an additional twenty minute wait there, the two gondola rides were uneventful. Arriving at the top was exhilarating and I loved the view. I had my own picnic lunch with the food that I brought. I then ascended to the top of the top summit and walked around and admired the views. I was disappointed to see that all the trails went immediately down into the valleys, without further scenic views that I craved. So I reluctantly descended and returned via the two gondolas. During the 10-15 minute wait to transfer at Chrindi, I considered going and hiking around the lake, bit couldn't convince myself that it would be worth it, and anyway, it wasn't clear that the trail totally encircled the lake. All-in-all, I was disappointed.... but then I decided to go to Harder Kulm in Interlaken, and that was fantastic!! WAS IT WORTH THE COST? It is covered by the Berner Oberland Pass WOULD "I VIST THIS PLACE" AGAIN? No- because it is hard and out-of-the-way to get to, and it is just an observation point, without peak hikes with views. ADVICE * Know that getting there is an effort * Know that there is an impressive peak view, but no peak hikes nor trails FULL DISCLOSURE "I visited this place" with the plan to write a "helpful" review and to attach "helpful" photos 📷 here on tripadvisor, so if these did "help" you, please indicate that by tikking the "thumbs up" 👍 symbol. Thanks.

    Good snowshoeing walk
Took the cable car up to the middle station, as according to the ticket lady the paths on the top were blocked due to snow. We went to the middle station and rented snowshoes and poles. A quick coffee stop in the cafe there with amazing views. After walking a well signed snowshoe trail, we took the cable car up to the top which provides even better views. We saw some wildlife on the way up. Snow paths are well signposted, a small ice rink on the middle station looked great. All in all a great day out

Bad experience at the Valentine Dinner 02/14/2020, Panoramarestaurant
Valentine dinner at the top of the mountain - why not? We booked the valentine dinner to make this event unforgettable but it ended up in a full disappointment. As for a valentine dinner you could certainly be expecting something special bud these guys, with all due respect, didn't show any creativity in their set up. No ambience, poor food quality and worst of all was the vine - it had cork and sadly wise there was no replacement to be considered, that made it better as for the wine. Well - what more could you expect? Definitely more for the price of CHF 79.00 per person. Drinks were charged (water, wine and coffee etc.) additionally . This was a full night mare and we were supper unhappy about everything that night. We reported this issue the day after and got little understanding by the management (executive Director) of the Stockhornbergbahnen AG. We asked for a refund but didn’t get any positive reaction, which is completely inacceptable after all this bad experience we had with them. This made our Valentine dinner unforgettable, indeed. For anyone considering spending their time and money up there, we strongly recommend not to expect too much from their services. What so ever, Good luck. Caring is sharing volks.

    Beautiful trip
The Stockhorn was covered by our Bernese Oberland pass so we thought we would visit. Took the train from Spiez a short ride and when you get off you can either get a bus to the Stockhorn entry or walk. We decided to walk, it took about 15 minutes through the village. You travel up the first cable car then find over the first mountain a panorama opens out with a bowl shaped area with a fishing lake. We got off and walked around the lake there are barbecue areas and picnic tables. Different walks to suit all capabilities. You can then either walk or climb the next rise or use the cable car again to get to the highest point. There you will have fantastic views toward the eiger Mönch and Jungfrau and beyond, and towards thun the opposite way. For walkers you can start longer walks from there, they were closed when we were there in May because still had snow lying. There are a couple of restaurants if you want food but lots of families there with picnics.

    Quiet and beautiful place
What can be better than standing on the top of the beautiful Alps and admire the perfect view? Nothing. Well, Stockhorn is a good place for those who adore hiking, mountain lakes and don't love crowdy places. It seems this place is not really popular as I didn't see there thousands of tourists like on other tops that I visited in Switzerland. And this is what I liked.

    Quiet Mountain to visit
We took the train from Spiez to the nearest stop, thereupon it was a 15 minute walk through the town to the cable car base station. Apart from a few other visitors, the cable car was almost empty to the middle station, and also the second cable car to the top station. Great views were afforded in the cars. I don't know what other times of the year, but middle of summer and this mountain was almost deserted, just a handful of people at the summit restaurant. We walked through the tunnel to see the views of Lake Thun, and also walked to the summit for great views all around the area. We decided to walk to the middle station, and apart from 1 other family we met along the way, we had the track and slopes to ourselves (and the cows). It made a change being in a nice location but away from the crowds and worth a visit.

    Great views near Thun
Stockhorn is a spectacular mountain peak near Thun/Interlaken. You can reach it by hiking or by cable car from Erlenbach. First cable car takes you to the Hinterstockensee lake. From here you take another one (smaller) to the top. The price for a return tiket is 58 CHF for adults. There are discounts for halfcard, season tickets, AG holders, children. You have plenty hiking options and the views from the top are amazing. You can see the 2 small lakes (Hinterstockensee and Oberstockensee) as well as Thun lake and the mountains nearby. There is a restaurant at the top and several viewing platforms.

    Stunning views
One of the few mountains I had not been up in the Interlaken area. Not disappointed. Reached via 2 cable cars, the views from the top are breath taking. One side you look down Lake Thun towards Interlaken & the mountains around the Jungfrau, the other towards Thun & Bern. Besides walking up/down, there is also the chance to bungee jump from a cable car!

    Bungee Jumping at Interlaken Switzerland
I couldn't have asked for a better first Bungee Jump experience. Entire team, guides, instructors at Stockhorn Interlaken were extremely professional. They clearly love their job and this was shown from the moment they arrived to pick me at Interlaken OST train station in their Mercedes van. To the jump - I jumped on the 12th June afternoon and the experience was incredible! To be honest i was little scared before the jump( specially when i had been seeing other group mates jumping in front of me for 45 minutes & I was in queue waiting for my turn".) .My instructor told me that i jumped perfectly during demo jump so i need not to worry. Before jump, she also advised me to TURN OFF my mind for couple of minutes and just live the moment. I exactly did the same and it turned out to be an amazing life time experience. I didn't feel even a small discomfort to my body. Now my fear for Bungee Jumping has gone and i want to jump again from the tallest building of world. Research says that "adventure activities" are more about dealing with mental stress than physical stress" & from my experience i can say that "it is absolutely true"! 1 Important learning which Bungee Jumping has taught me- Sometimes in life our biggest weaknesses is that we have a tendency to think too much and over analyze things before we make a decision. What I learnt from bungee jumping, is that the longer you wait to take the leap, the more time you have to make excuses and convince yourself to back out. Sometimes in life you just have to take that leap of faith. Close your eyes, jump and everything will work out. If you're having second thoughts about doing it, just do it! It's a memory I will have for the rest of my life. 10/10 experience and would 100% recommend Bungee with Stackhorn Interlaken team

    Excellent day out
We took a cable car up Stockhorn at 9.20 as we had reserved the breakfast buffet in the restaurant at the summit. There was plenty of choice, with cereals, different breads, croissants, cheeses, cold meats, preserves, yoghurts etc. There was rosti and scrambled egg available as a cooked option and plenty of fruit juices, tea and coffee. We thought the cost of CHF20 was reasonable, considering the high price of everything in Switzerland, and the breakfast with stunning views as an accompaniment was just what we hoped for. I would definitely recommend the breakfast. We then walked up to the summit for 360 degree views. We left the cable car half-way down the mountain at the mid station and walked round the lake. A lovely way to burn off some of the calories! The walk was only a little steep at the beginning and end. We then had drinks at the restaurant there, again drinking in the stunning views. The cable car isn't cheap, but we had the Bernese Oberland travel pass and so we had free access to all the trains, lake steamers and cable cars. This was an excellent decision to buy as it saved us a lot of money over the 10 days.

Great hiking paths and amazing scenery
We got the cable car to the top and walked back down - hard on the knees and some of the paths we chose were steep, but a great day out. Fab 360 views from the top and a lovely wild flower station. There is a great variety of paths you can choose to climb or descend - some a bit rocky and steep, others gentler, forested or meadow, some more child/senior friendly than others. The middle station is another option if you don't want to walk all the way. There is also a lovely cafe at the middle station, recommended for simple meals. There are two lakes for fishing part way up. A great day out.

    Nice but expensive
It's a well run operation and of course the views are excellent from the top with massive vistas of mountains all around and beautiful lake below. But €58 return is pretty expensive for what you get.

Amazing place for a full day trip
We visited the Stockhorn mountain in May with kids and took cable car all the way up. The place accepts Junior Karte and 1/2 fair cards, so entire trip was affordable as well. We had lunch on the top, the restaurant is very busy during lunch time, but good good at the end. Staff is trying their best with so many visitors. There is plenty of place to site inside or outside and on roof top. The trip to the panorama bridge is very good, the tunnel is a bit 1 min cold walk. Views are amazing all around. We hiked all the way down to the hinterstockensee, it's almost 80 min hike with kids. Amazing views all the way. Walt around lake is amazing. Seems to be a popular pace for fishing too. There is a play area and WC near lake too. Highly recommend and must see.

    Fabulous views
The cable-car goes up in two stages from the little village of Erlenbach im Simmental, you can either get out at the first station and walk round the lake or continue in the second smaller car to just below the summit of the Stockhorn. A steep path takes you up to the summit, where there are fantastic views, 360°, mountains, lakes, towns and villages are all laid out below you. Yes, do choose a day when you can really see all this ... The cable-car is not exactly cheap, but the views are worth paying for.

One of the best multi day hike-and-camp trips
This is such a fantastic area to hike. The look outs are breathtaking. We took the gondola up the mountain then spent four days hiking up around the mountain area slowly making our way down the mountain. We had a day of rain but we were able to find some enclosed huts to keep us dry over night. Look at the pictures - they speak for themselves. It was quiet, peaceful and rewarding hike. Finding water at these elevations are pretty tricky so make sure to bring enough with you and plan your routes so that you can refill in time. The cows are plentiful... and consequentially so is the accompanying grass fertilizer. :) A must do hike. We'll be back!

    A gem of a mountain
This is not a very well know mountain outside the region. But if you happen to be anywhere near the Lake of Thun this is a great place to visit, either to just go up and down with the gondola or to hike up/down the peak and around two picturesque little mountain lakes. Views are fantastic, towards the alps to the south, and the 'great plains' to the norths. Other than the peaks within the alps themselves, the Stockhorn gives you a great sense of the difference between the (relatively) flat lands of the Swiss Mittelland and then Germany and the majestic Alps.
