Discover the symbol of Thun

Medieval Thun Castle has been a majestic symbol inextricably linked with the town of Thun since the 12th century. The four white towers can be seen atop the castle hill from far and wide. The views of the surrounding mountains, Lake Thun and the old town are worth the visit alone.

Thun Castle is open all year, whatever the weather. Discover a knights’ hall dating from the Late Middle Ages and drink in the impressive all-round views from one of the towers. Elsewhere the exhibition of the castle museum will interest people of all ages. Before visiting, it’s worth checking the events calendar for Thun Castle: with everything from classical concerts to special illuminations, the castle serves as a cultural venue too.

The castle through a child’s eyes

Children can celebrate their birthdays here, and explore the castle in a fun way. "Made in Thun" is a search game that invites kids to crack a code to open a mystery box. They can also learn to be knights on the Knight’s Trail, which takes in the castles of Thun, Oberhofen and Spiez.

Treasure chamber of history

Built by the Dukes of Zähringen, the castle is a true treasure chamber of history. Audio guides in German, English, French, Italian and Chinese recount the colourful history of the castle, or you can take a castle tour to learn more about background of this Swiss cultural icon. Your museum visit is easily combined with an evening meal at the Restaurant and Hotel Schlossberg.

Knight’s hall for regal occasions

Looking for a grand venue for your wedding, birthday or company celebration? From mid-March to mid-November, you can rent the knight’s hall – which also has excellent acoustics.

Photo opportunity: View from the castle towers

The views from the castle towers are unique. To enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Bernese Alps, the old town and Lake Thun, the castle tower is the perfect spot for that photo to remember.

Lovely castle with interactive exhibits inside
Thun castle was lovely to visit for a couple of hours. Yes it is fairly bare on the inside but each floor has exhibits and digital interactive boards to either explain the exhibits and to try out some of the ancient ways of doing things. It is very well maintained and each of the 4 turrets give great view onto the town. Easy parking nearby...we visited the castle first and then went into town.

    Different type of castle
Quite different to the castles I have visited but maybe that's what i enjoyed so much about it, a good visit with lots of interesting information outside, the temporary exhibition was good too.

    Must see in Thun
This was a great way to get some history of the area. Even if you just go to get the scenic views from the turrets, it’s worth it

Thun Castle is a beautiful medieval castle.
Thun Castle was built beginning in the 1200s. It is a very beautiful castle that has been added to over the years. You can climb into the towers and see the intricately built interior of the castle.

    Great museum!
This 5-story museum within the Thun Castle was so interesting! There were incredibly well-preserved tapestries and other artifacts, many from the 1400s. The signage was in German, French, and English. The top floor, where you could see the structure of the wooden roof, as well as a video showing the techniques that were used to build it, was fascinating. There were great views of the city from the turrets. I would definitely recommend this museum!

    Interesting Exhibits / Great Views
I’m one who does not pass up a visit to castle or a blimp to the top of a tower. The castle administration was reasonable at 10CHF (I skipped the add on pottery exhibition). There are many interesting art exhibits through the 4 or 5 floors of the castle along with historical information about the castle. The construction aspects were fascinating, the wood at the top is over 600 years old. There are several exhibits on the construction of the roof along with the history of the building which has changed little since the 1400’s (new roof, addition of a level, etc) but the essential elements are the same. A great visit for an hour or two.

    No service dogs allowed
Can't comment on the inside: they would not allow our trained service dog into the castle. Guess if you are blind you are expected to walk into a wall, or a sword, or fall down stairs. Or if you have another medical condition, well, good luck.

    Imposing castle
An imposing castle which is worth the visit. It is quite a hike up but well worth the amazing views from the top. It is good fun to walk up the smaller towers on the corners to access the large central tower on each floor. Interesting video about carpentry also on show
