Point of view

Immerse yourself in the Middle Ages and admire the well-preserved round tower

The ruins of Unspunnen Castle, dating from the early 13th century, are situated in a beautiful natural setting next to a dense forest. In 1805, the famous Unspunnen Festival was held for the first time on the meadow next to the imposing site, since which time the ruin has been a popular destination for excursions. Find out more about the castle on a tour of the village.

The impressive castle ruins tower above the picturesque village of Wilderswil on a rocky promontory at the foot of the Abendberg. The historic site dates from the early 13th century and was owned by several noble families before finally coming under the authority of the Canton of Berne. In 1533 the impressive building was allowed to fall into disrepair. The walls of the central round tower, parts of the ring walls and the two residential wings can still be admired. Did you know that the traditional Unspunnen festival was first held at the Unspunnen ruins in 1805? This famous Alpine shepherds’ festival turned the castle into a subject for the new Alpine romanticism. Find out more about the historical ruins in the brochure “Cultural Walks at the Entrance to the Lütschinen Valleys”, which informs you about the two ruins in Wilderswil on the Castle Path, or go on a leisurely stroll to the Unspunnen castle ruins, from where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Jungfrau massif.
