The hike starts at the charming Weissenburg train station where you can fill up with water from the once-famous Weissenburg springs. We leisurely stroll along the path through the natural forest and admire the artfully constructed dry stone walls that were extensively restored in 2013. On the grounds of the former grand hotel, we take in this impressive place, which during the spa culture era was a gathering spot for the aristocracy and known throughout Europe. The Weissenburg spa association, with its volunteers, cares for the grounds and rest area and has set up an information pavilion about the rich spa history of the Simmental here.
We now venture deeper into the gorge; nature and landscape become more dramatic.
We suddenly come upon the ruins of the Back Bath restored in 2014 and 2015 and are amazed at the boldness of the entrepreneurs who operated a spa hotel here 150 years ago. We cross the Morgete creek on a small suspension bridge. Via several stairs and a secured path, we reach the Leiternweide suspension bridge. The impressive rope bridge spans a considerable 111 meters, crossing the gorge above the Morgete creek, 111 meters below.
We now follow the signs to the prehistoric caves in the Gsässfluh. An information board at the start of the cave trail provides the main facts about the caves. In the easily accessible Zwärgliloch, there is a grill spot inviting for a rest as well as an information panel. The Mamilchloch and Schnureloch caves are further evidence of settlements of people around 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, who used these caves in the Stone Age - undisturbed by cave bears - as summer homes. Numerous bone finds proving this are kept at the Natural History Museum in Bern. A solar system beside the Mamilchloch provides mystical lighting. The cave trail is secured with ladders and ropes but requires caution in wet weather. (T3 – demanding mountain hiking).
Comfortable mountain paths lead over Ställenen and Bunschen or through the Hüpbach meadows to Oberwil train station. We enjoy the beautiful views and the expanse of the central Simmental and conclude our hike with a walk through the village.
