A long descent, a short but steep ascent – and in between a crime story. The scene is the famous Reichenbach Falls, starring Arthur Conan Doyle's even more famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes is omnipresent in Meiringen. And already on the way, descending from Rosenlaui, you encounter Sir Conan Doyle's famous detective. The path leads past the impressive Reichenbach Falls – and even past the (suspended) spot where Holmes challenged his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty to a fight, after which he fell to the depths following a scuffle. A plaque points this out. The mighty waterfall is 120 m high and 40 m wide. But that's not all: the entire fall consists of a 300-meter-high cascade of seven spray-filled falls. Access on the west side is facilitated by a mountain railway. In 1899, bold engineers laid the rails of the then factory railway to the roaring waters here. Today, the nostalgic railway with its faithfully reconstructed wooden carriage takes guests to the scene with viewing terraces offering breathtaking views of the waterfall and Hasli valley.
