New performance style for the Ballenberg landscape theatre

Mann mit Hut wäscht mit Schwamm einen anderen Mann

The Ballenberg landscape theatre is one of the best-known open-air theatres in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. The "Brandboden" travelling theatre tells the story of Melk the charcoal burner, which is loosely based on "Heart of Stone" by Wilhelm Hauff. Instead of sitting in the stands as usual, theatregoers move around outdoors in the historic setting of the Ballenberg.

More about the play

Mann mit Hut starrt in die Weite

"Brandboden or how Melk takes the coals from the fire" recounts the story of Melk, a young charcoal burner born into poverty. Starting out as an outsider in the village, he rises to become a rich businessman. On his path to riches, Melk has to overcome several obstacles, even losing his sweetheart along the way. Now he is no longer an outsider but alone and lonely. Will he ultimately rediscover his roots and win back his true love? The romance written and directed by Ueli Blum is loosely based on the famous story "Heart of Stone" by Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827).

A theatrical tour for spectators

Mann zeigt in die Ferne, neben ihm ein weiterer Mann

In this new style of theatre, guests experience the action up close in three acts. As the 100-minute performance progresses, spectators move from one venue of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum to the next, thereby following the mystical trail of the charcoal burner Melk and becoming part of the story themselves.
