Biking fun with a choice of routes and views of the Bernese Oberland mountain peaks

Regardless of whether you prefer your biking leisurely or fast, take the opportunity to experience a unique ride. Two different routes lead from Vorsass to Beatenberg. Race down the winding wooded roads and experience the imposing alpine panorama and natural landscapes from a different angle.

During the summer season you can hire scooter bikes at the Niederhornbahn’s middle station in Vorsass. The staff will equip you with the necessary equipment and helmet before you set off. The cable car takes you straight to Vorsass. Two different routes with the two mascots Rocky the ibex and Happy the bunny take you along unsurfaced and asphalt roads to the railway station in Beatenberg. It’s an unforgettable experience offering plenty of fun and action. Choose your own pace – leisurely or fast. The routes wind their way through verdant forests, passing lush meadows and gushing mountain streams on the way. If you feel like a taking a break, you can stop at one of the well laid out barbecue areas, so it’s worth bringing a nice picnic with you.

“Rocky's run” scooter bike route, Vorsass – Beatenberg direct

The 6 km route is ideal for families and school parties. On this direct route, you speed downhill from Vorsass to Beatenberg Station on a varied, fast-paced route along asphalted forest roads. The journey time is 20 to 30 minutes.

“Happy's trail” scooter bike route, Vorsass – Beatenberg via Waldegg

The leisurely "Happy's trail" is less steep and runs along asphalted forest roads and some unpaved roads. It’s a more leisurely route but involves some gradients and so requires a greater level of fitness. Leaving Vorsass, you ride towards Bodenalp and then through the forest to the Rischerental. Once you reach Waldegg, you cycle along the main road through the village of Beatenberg, the longest village in Europe, to Beatenberg railway station. The route is around 12 km long and takes about 40 to 60 minutes to cycle.

Family discount

The parents and their first child are charged, but each additional child travels free of charge. This discount also applies to the scooter bike hire. The Junior travelcard and Children’s Co-travelcard which cost CHF 30, allow children aged six to 16 who are accompanied by a parent or grandparent with a valid ticket to travel on the railways free of charge for a whole year.

    solitude in february
i went up on niederhorn gondola on a february morning, i was the only tourist there. now, contrast that to the hundreds milling about in jungfraujoch or lauterbrunnen. that was me many years ago but now after 20+ trips, i prefer to live like a local in switzerland ski season appears to have ended on niederhorn. not enough snow to ski consistently but still enough for the appearance of winter wonderland. however the snow seems thin this year, less than i thought for a february once at the top, you will be treated with the panoramic view of the eiger, monch, jungfrau mountain peaks. there is also a restaurant onsite. the gondola was having some technical problems on the day i visited (shocking, i know, for switzerland) so i decided to hike down to the middle station Vorsass as they fix the problem. it was a 1h stroll along the snowy path and through the woods. worth the time and solitude. then it was gondola time again back down to beatenberg station

Better and more fun than Jungfrau
Trotti Hike is a must-try. You have to get off in the mid way, not to the peak. And pls choose “rocky run” route. For “happy trail”, it is not that happy actually as some of the rouge is flat or uphill and you have to push the bike…i guess that is why it takes longer time

    Beatenburg to Niederhorn
Fantastic experience, we expected just a fenicular railway but after a little while, we came to a station where we got off and then had to go on a cable car all the way to the top of the Niederhorn, unfortunately there was a lot of cloud so you couldn’t see the brilliant views but a lovely visit none the less.

Enjoy the breathtaking view with a beer
Enjoy the mountain, lake and sun while having a locally brewed beer. The playground at the top of the mountain would keep the little ones busy and allow parents to enjoy their moments.

Scenic silent glide to the top of the mountain
PROS • Such tremendous fun!! • So smooth and quiet and effortless • Beautiful trip of three linked cable cars • New shiny equipment • Not crowded; frequent service CONS I always hope to be alone in the cable car- that didn’t happen “I VISITED THIS PLACE “… … on the way to hiking to the top of Niederhorn. It was fun and effortless. I took candid photos of the people sitting opposite us- I hope that you find them “helpful.” Full disclosure- the truth is that I didn’t know the difference between Beseech Beatenbuch Station and Beatenberg until I got here- and now, I know that… The first Is the ground station with links to the boat and the bus. This one in this review is the middle station for sitting between fun icular and cache car. I saw that automobiles can get here and park; that’s about all I know- yes: of course there were hiking trails from this middle station too.

The only way to reach the Niederhorn, other than hiking
We were taking a day-trip, driving around the north side of Lake Thun and, of course, going up the Niederhorn was on our list of things to do. We parked at the garage at Beatenbucht Station and took the funicular railway train to Beatenberg, which is probably 1/4th of the way up. From there we switched to the aerial cable car (gondola) for the ride to the summit. The ride takes you to an elevation 6,440 feet, providing a fantastic panoramic view of Lake Thun and the entire Bernese Alps. The ascending trip takes about an hour and the photo ops are endless. At the top, there is a restaurant, a playground for the kids, and numerous hiking trails. It was a beautiful afternoon and we could have hopped on one of the trails for a long scenic hike but instead, we just walked along the ridge on one of the trails for a short distance. We then got a table on the patio of the restaurant, enjoyed the view, and had some coffee and cake. The views of the Alps were spectacular: some of the best that we saw on our vacation. The ride up is a little expensive, but how many times will you get a chance to do this? A "must" place to visit while you are in Switzerland.

Panoramic views surrounded with Alps and glimpses of lake thun from top
I visited this place during Christmas holidays. It provides panoramic views starting the journey from lake Thun, followed by farnicular tram ride Upto beatenberg and most memorable trip with panoramic cable car till top of Niederhorn. What an excellent place to visit especially on a sunny day! You can not stop yourself by clicking endless photos in your camera from top. You can have several different views from top of it. Must visit place if you have enough time in Switzerland.

    Fabulous views, great hiking!
This cable-car takes you all the way from the lake to the top of the mountain, with 2 stops along the way if you want to get out to check out Beatenberg village, ride the stand-up bikes down from the mid-point, or take a mid-elevation hike. There are restaurants and restrooms at the top and midpoint, and maps with lots of hiking trails, including meandering along the ridge line (keep your children close-there are very steep drop-offs). This was a perfect day outing for my family, with one member who wanted to relax at the top and enjoy the view, then take the cable-car back down, and others who wanted to hike down. A great day for all, with incredible views in every direction!

    stunning views
Excellent way to get to the top. We were here only for a few hours in september, unfortunately didn't have much time now. Next time we plan more time in this area, to do some more hiking from the top.

    Modern & safe
Cool & safe funicular that lifts you up to 1950m. There is a restaurant on top and some realxing walks in intact nature. There is no need to bring special mountain gear

    Great views
Beautiful views at the top. Hiked to Gemmenalphorn, a moderate hike. I was staying in Beatenberg and had a guest card discount, which helped with the price. A less crowded place than Interlaken or Grindelwald, but with the same views of the Jungfrau.

    Up to the top
Holy smoke we took this cable car which by the way was pretty expensive. Since we had a toddler and a baby with us we had no choice. I would recommend to walk instead which saves you a lot of money. Just take the cable car to the middle station and then walk the rest. Finally on the top you have a fantastic view of the mountains if the sky is clear. It’s not much to do on the top. There is a restaurant( separat review) and some hiking trails. It’s worth to make this trip. It’s easy to park your car where you take the cable car. It’s a few minutes walk from the parking area to the cable car. We had a stroller with to small children and there is no problem to go in and out from the cable car. If it would be more than 50 Swiss frank/pers to go up to the top. I would come back but for a family excursions with kids in a stroller it’s maybe better to wait. It’s very steep on the top so I wouldn’t recommend letting children run on their own.

    Incredible views of the Alps
From Beatenbuch we took the vehicular railway to Beatenberg where we then got the gondola to the top of Niederhorn. The views of the Alps e.g. Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau is spectacular. There are plenty of walks and a nice cafe/rest. We walked down to the first gondola stop where some of us took the gondola down whilst the more adventurous hired "trotty" bikes. Overall it is a good day out but like most of Switzerland needs reasonable weather.
