Gain insights into the history of cave exploration

Complete your tour of the impressive St. Beatus caves with a visit to the caves museum. Along the way you will learn a great deal about the cave system, cave dwellers and cave exploration as an audio guide provides the key information.

Want to explore the historical background of St. Beatus caves in more detail? According to legend, this natural wonder, which is millions of years old, provided Saint Beatus with a safe haven after he expelled a fire-breathing dragon which then plunged into Lake Thun with a terrifying roar. In fact, the Beatus caves are known to have been inhabited until the Middle Ages.

Entry to the caves museum is included in the entry price for St. Beatus caves. The museum clearly sets out interesting facts about cave exploration and the history of the cave system. One section of the exhibition is devoted to geology. How are caves actually formed? The museum uses a range of modern presentation techniques to provide answers to this and many other questions on rock formation. A multimedia screen wall provides insights into cave systems in Switzerland and around the world. Interactive activities that engage the senses ensure an active and memorable museum experience that children will love too. There are many animal species in and around the St. Beatus caves. Learn more about those that inhabit the caves and the animals living around the caves. In the caves museum, the tour ends with a visit in a little souvenir shop, the Beatus-Shop.

Amazing 1km walk through the caves at all times of year
Having paid 7CHF for parking at the bottom, we walked up the steep steps with such a lovely view of lake Thun and the steep hillside. It cost about 20CHF each to get in and we really enjoyed it. The museum was very interesting, go there first, as it explains all about the rock formation and the changes over time about discovering the length of the cave. Then we walked the whole route- we were there on a Sunday lunchtime, but it did not feel too busy. Wear walking shoes and a jacket . Really beautiful on the inside seeing the grottos. Afterwards we had a tea at the cafe with the beautiful view of lake Thun in the sunshine. Definitely worth doing. Not as impressive as other caves we have been to but still worth seeing.

    Unbelievably beautiful
Stunning beauty of the waterfall and although steep uphill but roads very well paved and every few steps you see new view of the waterfalls and the lake view, truly spectacular Cave is uphill as well but truly worth the hassle Do not miss it You can go easily by bus 21 from Interlaken

    Great place to see
Get here as early as you can as it can be very busy, bring warm clothing and good footwear as the caves can be cold and slippy. Very interesting site though and worth a visit. Bus stop goes right outside which is handy

Beautiful place to visit even if you don't go through the caves!
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to St. Beatus Caves. We were able to park just down the road and then walked up to the entrance. It is a climb, but it's a beautiful walk along the waterfalls and across the bridge and you can take your time. My husband and I enjoyed the cave tour, although it was a little long. After the tour, we had a very nice lunch at the restaurant and enjoyed the unbeatable views across the lake. This is well worth the trip even if you decide not to go through the cave tour. (We went in June of 24 but I couldn't select that...)

Travel there free on the bus with the Interlaken guest pass. Fantastic views across the lake. Fascinating caves which go on for almost a kilometre. Pretty reasonable value for money.

    Very nice St Beautus Cave
We did a side trip to Switzerland after our conference. In interlaken, we went to st beautus cave via bus using our Swiss travel pass. It is quite a steep climb. But you can stop and take a rest along the way. Once inside you will see a natural wonder! It’s quite cold around 10-12C so a jacket might be helpful!

I want senior people to realise that you have to go up not only just to get to the caves but inside the cave itself So may be for someone it worth just to enjoy the view from outside

    side excursion
i dont consider this a must-do, especially if it is your first trip to bernese oberland. but the cave with river system is more interesting than i thought plus, the bus route there is scenic since it goes along lake thun take note you have to hike a steep paved trail for 15 min once you get there, since the entrance to the cave is in the middle of a rock face.

NEVER MISS IT ON INTERLAKEN TRIP
St. Beatus caves are the place which majority of tourists miss out when they visit Interlaken. Its a short bus ride and NEVER TO MISS experience. The caves inside the waterfalls is an awesome experience. Even though steep walk but its comfortable and enjoyable. The rushing sound of water in the path at times creates eerie feeling but you shall.love it. Fantastic insta pics can be captured.
