The 260-meter-high via ferrata on Rotstock is a route for via ferrata climbers and experienced, sure-footed mountain hikers (with the necessary equipment). The key point is the vertical step immediately after the start. It is strongly advised not to attempt the route in snow, heavy rain, or icy conditions. Rockfall cannot be excluded—just like everywhere on the Eiger (source: Myswitzerland.com).

Approach: From Eigergletscher station on the Eiger Trail up to the Grasschulter Wart, then on traces of paths up to the start at 2400 m behind a rock head, immediately left of the Rotstock gorge; 45 minutes.

Via ferrata Eiger-Rotstock: The route along the new-old via ferrata is clear; easy walking sections are marked only with cairns. From the Rotstock saddle, climb quickly in steps to the flat summit of Rotstock (2663 m), which falls steeply on all sides; 1 hour 15 minutes from the start.

Return: Back to the saddle and southwestwards over scree and slab steps (cairns and fixed ropes) down to Eigergletscher station; 45 minutes.

Directions & Parking facilities

Take the A8 to Interlaken and through the Lütschental valley to Grindelwald or first also through the Lütschental and then through the Lauterbrunnen valley to Lauterbrunnen. Park near the station and take the Wengernalp Railway (rack railway of the Jungfrau Railway) to Eigergletscher station.
