- Start: Oey-Diemtigen
- Destination: Niesen
From the Oey-Diemtigen station first valley inward, over the railway line, follow the station grounds a short distance valley outward, then at the end turn towards the slope to Hasli. Along the way, magnificent Simmental houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Those who appreciate these witnesses of old carpentry art should not miss the short detour at the Sälbeze signpost to one of the most beautiful houses in the area, the Sälbezehus built in 1738. The Niesen trail continues further valley downstream along a forest edge to Zünegg (to Chessel–Wimmis 1h15). The deep view down to the Simme plain, 200 m lower, is impressive.
As the slope increases, it goes up a rough forest road. In a zigzag, a path winds over meadows and through the forest up to Bruchgeeren. Along the stream, the path goes into the rock basin of Geeri formed by Drunengalm and Fromberghore. After a steep section, you cross the stream to the hut on the Upper Bruchgeerenberg. Then continue over the sheep pasture on trail traces towards the rock basin just below the hut on Lower Geeri and out onto the mountain ridge descending from Fromberghore. The view from the edge of the terrain into the Simmental, to the Stockhorn chain, and into the Aare valley up to the high-rise buildings at the outskirts of Bern is remarkable.
Turning into Chummli, the uniformly sloping west flank of the Niesen towards the Alpbachgraben dominates the scene. The next two kilometers of the path are flat. Below the impressive northern wall of Fromberghore, the Bettflue, the path crosses ravines, debris slopes, and swampy spots and finally reaches the hut on Upper Stalden (from Bergli–Wimmis 2h20). The destination is unmistakable. The path winds in wide hairpin turns over the uniformly inclined pasture area. In the gap between Niesen and Fromberghore, the Doldenhorn appears as the first high Alpine peak. The path turns north again to Schafboden (from Ahorni–Wimmis 3h), runs parallel to the ridge in the upper part of the ascent, and passes the mountain house to the viewing terrace on the Niesen. The view is incomparable: countless pre-Alpine and high Alpine peaks from Titlis to Mont Blanc limit the horizon. The view over the Swiss Plateau and the Jura, Vosges, and Black Forest mountain ranges fascinates in a similar way as the deep view onto Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
