At the Oey bus stop, follow the road branching off from the main road for a few steps, then keep left and turn right at the Alte Säge onto the riverside path along the Engstlige, leaving traffic and hustle behind and fully enjoying the calm and tranquility of this magnificent valley hike.
Those taking the route during the shortest winter days should choose the midday time to enjoy the sparse winter sun. The short sunshine duration in the midwinter has the advantage that the snow remains for a long time. Snow-covered fir trees and meadows and pastures covered with a thick layer of snow therefore shape the landscape – this is winter in its most beautiful form.
On a wide, well-prepared path, it follows the young Engstlige. The stream is partially covered with ice and snow in midwinter, while in other places it bubbles happily open. The path is mostly flat; occasionally some slight ascents must be overcome. Bir Mühli, in the Boden area, the road is underpassed (junction option to Boden–Fuhren–Adelboden, 1h30). Over Bir Brücke, the riverside path continues on the western side of the Engstlige. Only in the Roufmatta area is the stream crossed on a pretty wooden bridge. The path runs for almost 200 m on a lightly trafficked small road and then leads directly into the forest, where it rises slightly a bit away from the stream. Finally, it goes along the cross-country ski trail uphill to Unter dem Birg.
The return trip is either on foot by the same route or by bus, which stops in front of the aerial cableway station. An attractive addition to this valley hike is a trip by cable car to the Engstligenalp, which can be ideally combined with a walk on the Engstligenalp winter circular route (route 17a).
