Lombachalp – sheer nature

Visit the idyllic moorland of the Bernese Oberland

The Lombachalp offers a balance between tranquillity and sporting activity amid stunning natural surroundings. The recreation area above Interlaken is always worth visiting. Come and be enchanted by a unique landscape of upland moor.

Experience the purity of nature from Interlaken

Above Interlaken and Habkern is a well-kept secret for nature lovers: the Lombachalp, with its mystical moors, untouched firs and mountain pines, gentle streams and bizarre limestone formations. Spanning 86 square km, the Lombachalp is one of the largest and most impressive areas of moorland in Switzerland. Enjoy impressive walks amid rare plant and animal life – and stop for a barbecue along the way.

Idyllic nature reserve with upland moor

The Lombachalp comprises an expanse of low moor and an area of protected upland moor. Given its sensitivity and scarcity, the upland moor zone is subject to a nature conservation order, with access prohibited year-round. This habitat for rare and endangered fauna (and especially bird species) is maintained through the existence of the nature reserve and the work of the ranger. The Lombachalp is a bird habitat of international importance. In autumn, the moors change colour to a natural red that blends with the brown autumnal grasses, grey rocks and deep green firs to produce a wonderfully photogenic scene.

Explore the Lombachalp with research set, or a ranger

Between June and October, you can rent a research set from the Jägerstübli restaurant; equipped with a manual, magnifying glass and some hydrochloric acid, you are ready to study the moorland in greater depth. Exploring the nature reserve under your own steam is great fun for children and adults alike. Another way to see more of the Lombachalp is to join a guided excursion with a ranger. In this way you will learn a great deal about plant and animal life, the moorland and the work of the ranger.

Magical winter landscape

Looking for peace and quiet amid the snowy mountain landscape? On the Lombachalp, you are in exactly the right place. Take the alpin bus from Habkern to the Lombachalp, then rent some snowshoes or cross-country ski gear from the Jägerstübli restaurant. As you glide down primed cross-country tracks, you will pass snow-laden fir forests. Prefer to walk? Then take a well-maintained winter trail through the crisp snow. Snowshoes or cross-country skis are also ideal for a highly recommended visit to the Winterröscht viewpoint, where the panoramic views make every step worthwhile.

Travel on wheels – or on foot

Whether hiking to the renowned Augstmatthorn or towards the Hohgant, the Lombachalp is a walkers’ paradise. Along the way you may encounter a majestic ibex. Keen mountain bikers can follow official, signposted routes around the Hohgant, ideally concluding their adventure with a refreshing drink or delicious meringue at the Jägerstübli restaurant.
